Bijoux Beginnings

Bijoux wasn’t always about the business of birth.

When Cydney went away to college in 2004, she was very uncertain of her future. The only thing she’d known she wanted to do was “help people.” Whatever that looked like. As a teen and young adult, Cydney struggled to believe in herself. She’s always been a fantastic cheerleader for others; words of affirmation is her love language after all. But when it came to believing in herself and teaching people how to treat her well, she couldn’t make the mental and emotional connection.

Cydney’s dad knew of her passion for French language and culture. She’d taken French since middle school and wanted to be fluent in the language. During her first year of undergrad, her dad asked her if she knew what “bijoux” meant. “Of course dad! It means a precious jewel or stone.” He told Cydney he would from now on call her “Bijoux” because he wanted her to forever remember that she is more valuable than a gold and more precious than the rarest stone. Cydney’s company was inspired by her dad long before she knew it’d be her calling.

It wasn’t until years later when Cydney decided to embark on her journey to become a doula that she thought more intentionally about a name for her company. It was after her younger sister texted Cydney with names and suggested a few that included “Bijoux.” Her sister reminded her that bijoux means treasure or jewel typically incorporated into fabric making the connection that birth and babies are just the same: a treasure, incorporated into the fabric of who we are as humans. It was because of her dad’s commitment to raising a self-confident woman and her sister’s unwavering love and belief that Bijoux Babies Doula Services was born.
